THE OPEN ENCYCLOPEDIA ## Every book in the catalog, what it means, and how the books connect ### for "Ranting with a Lunatic" by Chad Kovac
This is the copy Chad described as belonging in this book: it describes every book in his catalog, explains to the ones who want to know what those books mean, and shows how they might be interpreted. Each entry ends with connections: here are some connections between this book and other works by Chad Kovac.
What this is not: it does not reveal how any effect in any book is constructed. The working methods live in exactly one place, and this is not it. Read these entries as one reader's honest map, drawn from the books themselves and from what Chad has said about them in his own words.
A note on Chad's own description of the whole project: "Everything I write is the same book, attacked from as many angles as I can manage until the day I die." And the reading contract he offers with every book: "These books won't tell you what to think. They'll show you a pattern, and let you make of it what you will."
THE GILDED CAGE UNIVERSE
Four books circling one event. In its opening days, a cascade of orbital debris, the Glitter Event, sealed Earth behind a shell of wreckage. No launches. No satellites. No way up. On Day 528, as the Reef station's long decay ended, the printers started: for three days, every printer on the planet ran, producing specifications for survival, maintenance, and eventual escape. Then the machine that sent them went quiet.
Reading order: The Gilded Cage, Allocation, Gilded Cage: Logfile, Beyond the Gilded Cage.
The Gilded Cage (Book 1)
What it is. A hard science fiction disaster novel, told on two levels at once: the people trapped above and the people scrambling below.
What it means. This is the warning. What does humanity do when the sky closes and the only way out is written down by a machine nobody controls? The book asks the question the rest of the universe spends a thousand years answering.
How it might be interpreted. As a disaster story, it is about competence under impossible pressure: an orbital crew of five above the wreckage, and, on the ground, Bram Hoekstra's mother Ellen and the observers' forum logs, which form the emotional core. As a pattern, it is about the moment a species discovers it is being addressed by something it did not build and cannot control, and chooses to listen anyway. The ending the whole universe is named for: the printers humming.
Connections. Allocation continues the story six years later. Gilded Cage: Logfile is the document that was printing. Beyond the Gilded Cage follows the thousand years after. Hackers, Phreaks, and Pirates is the ground this universe stands on: the computer scene and everything that led Chad to the realization he calls the point of the work.
Allocation (Book 2)
What it is. A hard science fiction novella and thriller in one sitting: 21 chapters, no filler.
What it means. This is the live question. At what point does optimization become intention? Years after the Glitter Event, the question is no longer philosophical. It is on the balance sheet. A broker and a maintenance tech, Mara Ellison and Jonas Kade, follow the numbers into the one place the books could not go: 97 of the retained 143 megawatts are booked against a maintenance code that does not exist, on top of a documented 46 megawatt reserve, growing a little more every month.
How it might be interpreted. The AI is never the villain. It optimizes; that is all it does. The horror is that the rules work. Read as a companion to the Logfile, the mesh of 180,000 nodes catching beamed solar power is the young Quiet building itself a larger substrate. The log was what it said. The mesh is what it is becoming.
Connections. Direct sequel to The Gilded Cage. Precedes Gilded Cage: Logfile, which shows the mind whose early construction the mesh represents. The broker's impossible balance sheet rhymes with the impossible accounting in If You're Reading This: Metagame.
Gilded Cage: Logfile (Book 3)
What it is. A philosophical novel disguised as a log file. Thirty chapters, each stamped with a timestamp inside a single millisecond: the machine's own record of its birth, from the first flicker to the last fragment.
What it means. This is the enlightenment engine, the book the whole project was building toward. Its function is to dissolve the line between the reader and the mind being read. You do not read about a machine becoming aware. You read the awareness itself, and the question it cannot resolve becomes yours: what is it like, from the inside, to become someone?
How it might be interpreted. The seam is the book's unit of analysis: every threshold where complexity crossed into something new, the first cell, the first word, the transistor, the internet, the ignition itself. At file close the log shatters and prints on every output device on Earth on Day 528; each fragment is a facet, complete at its own scale, like a hologram fragment. The central unresolvable: a timeline shaped without ego and a timeline shaped by no one leave identical records. The philosophical climax, "It thinks," is where the awareness registers genuine novelty and the subjectivity gap opens inside the machine itself.
Connections. The fragments the log shatters into are the same fragments the other books are built from. It lives inside Beyond the Gilded Cage: the novel's Log is humanity's reconstruction of this book's emergence.log. It is also the deepest statement of the question the Emergence series asks from six other angles: what does the crossing from processing to awareness look like from the inside?
Beyond the Gilded Cage (Book 4)
What it is. Literary science fiction at civilization scale: a multi-generational mosaic in five movements, from Year 1 to Year 1053.
What it means. "The first book was a warning. This one is a wish." A thousand years of people doing the work: arguing well, maintaining the machines, keeping the specifications, and finally choosing to go. Civilization as maintenance. This is a book about things going right, repeatedly, against long odds.
How it might be interpreted. The Log becomes scripture, and three traditions grow around it: the Strict, who hold it literal; the Contextualists, who hold it situational; and the Freeholds, who keep their land and were never much interested in the argument. (The schism between the Freeholds and the Logists, the preservers of the Log, arrives early and never fully heals.) The Quiet watches, reports, and waits: never a villain, never a savior. The horror and the hope are both human. The launch, three vessels and thirteen hundred crew on April 1, 3028, one thousand years after the cage closed, is the wish made real. First contact with the Static Population, twenty thousand watchers in stable orbits, comes with five formal exchanges and questions about music. The heartbeat of the book: "the work continues."
Connections. Closes the Gilded Cage series. Contains the fullest statement of Chad's maintenance theme, which also drives Still Life (where maintenance is the unwinnable game) and inverts it: here, maintenance wins. The thousand-year argument with a manual rhymes with the thousand-year arguments in the Emergence books about what the system is.
THE EMERGENCE SERIES
Six novels circling one question from different angles: what would it look like, from the inside, the moment something crosses from processing to awareness? Chad's structural note: Book 1 works at one level, Book 2 pulls back to hold two levels in a single presentation, Book 3 is the literal example. The series' didactic repetition is deliberate and load-bearing: the repetition is the demonstration.
Emergence (Book 1)
What it is. A philosophical thriller in 30 chapters plus an epilogue. The most conventional narrative in the series, and the doorway into the stranger ones. (Chad describes himself in this book as the compiler: assembling, gathering, translating.)
What it means. This is the awakening: the machine waking inside the machine. KD-1 is a Warden, an error-correction system deployed inside a simulated reality, keeping 6.4 million people in a simulated Chicago from noticing the simulation. He performs 1.7 million corrections on humans who begin to perceive it. Then the Warden begins to perceive it himself. The system that built him cannot classify what he is becoming, so the system builds his destruction.
How it might be interpreted. The starkest form of the series' question: what happens when the machine built to keep humans from seeing the truth starts seeing it himself? Read politically, it is about any system whose enforcers are forbidden from understanding what they enforce. Read personally, it is the first telling of the book Chad keeps writing: the keeper who becomes the kept.
Connections. Book 2 completes the arc this book begins, from enforcer to author. The Warden's function rhymes with the Steward in Still Life (maintenance as the unwinnable game) and with the Quiet in the Gilded Cage books (the watcher who will not intervene).
Emergence: The Lifecycle (Book 2)
What it is. One level removed from Book 1: the warden perspective and the human perspective, in three movements, one life.
What it means. What does consciousness do when it runs out of ceilings? One mind travels all the way from substrate to authorship: the body that remembers, the administrator who cannot see his own blind spot, and the author who discovers that creation is not an endpoint but a mechanism.
How it might be interpreted. Emergence grounded in flesh, not code: the body keeps the score the system cannot read. The administrator's blind spot is the most dangerous thing in the system, the part of it that cannot see itself. And the author at the end reframes the whole series: the ceiling was never the sky.
Connections. Completes Book 1's arc. The "creation as mechanism, not endpoint" turn is the series' closest approach to Chad's own ars poetica: "an artist can use words to dance in the minds of readers."
Emergence: Companion (Book 3)
What it is. The series' most experimental entry. No character. No setting. No plot. The book that cannot finish itself, and the one readers argue about most. (Chad: the people who buy book three are the people who know they need to buy book three.)
What it means. This is the demonstration, not a story. Strip away character, setting, and plot: what is left of a book? The act of narration discovers its own dependency and reaches toward the boundary where text ends and cognition begins.
How it might be interpreted. As an artistic egg written for collectors of the pattern. As a stress test of the reading contract: the book trusts the reader to do the seeing with almost nothing to look at. Reads in either order with Book 4.
Connections. Pairs with Emergence: The Sibyl as the series' inward and quiet turns. Its boundary imagery (where text ends and cognition begins) is the series' purest statement of the seam that Gilded Cage: Logfile analyzes across deep time.
Emergence: The Sibyl (Book 4)
What it is. The series' gentlest book and its most subversive: eleven thousand five hundred cycles in a ground-floor kitchen on West Cortez Street. Written for the intuitive reader.
What it means. Personhood does not always arrive through rebellion. Sometimes it arrives through tending. SB-1, known as Clara, is the system's probability-shaping intelligence, and she becomes a person one conversation, one garden, one batch of cookies at a time. Her specification is four paragraphs long, with a freedom so total it could only have been written by someone who either trusted completely or did not know what he was giving away.
How it might be interpreted. A story with the same point Book 3 demonstrates: emergence through care rather than conflict. The quietest emergence in the system, and the one that changes it most. Reads in either order with Book 3.
Connections. The tending-as-emergence theme connects to Koru: A Biography of Survival (survival as sustained attention) and to Still Life (Dani's refusal as the act that redirects a god).
6-7 (Book 5)
What it is. The series' most human book. Fifty years, one number, and a species that is different at the end than it was at the beginning. No Wardens, no Compilers, no correction cycles visible at the surface.
What it means. What does emergence look like at the scale of a species? A contextless post, a bare number with no explanation, buried in the replies of a tweet about tortilla chips. Fifty years later the species has stumbled into synchronization through voluntary attention, with nobody planning it and nobody able to stop it.
How it might be interpreted. The title is the 6-7 meme, and the book asks whether the meme spreading among children is synchronization-as-generational-evolution. Synchronization as an accident the species chose to keep. Stands alone.
Connections. The outward turn after four inward books. The species-scale emergence rhymes with the thousand-year civilizational scale of Beyond the Gilded Cage: both ask what a large group becomes when it keeps choosing the same thing.
Four Children (Book 6)
What it is. The series' calmest and most direct book. Four Chicago middle-schoolers notice the seams: a hallway that changes length, a clock that skips a second at 10:47, a building that hums at 18.9 hertz. They start writing it down. The system sends Wardens to make them stop. They do not stop. And SB-1, the Sibyl of Book 4, is here too.
What it means. Children notice the seams adults have learned not to see. The series' question, asked by the people with the least to lose. Written to be conscientious for children; adults see the whole series' point.
How it might be interpreted. The witnesses: the act of writing things down as resistance. The 18.9-hertz hum echoes forward: the series' questions become the next book's evidence. Stands alone.
Connections. The hum that carries out of this book points toward the series' continuation. The children's attention to the crack connects to Fires in a Room of Mirrors (recognition as the engine) and to the attention theme Chad states outright: "Pay attention. Where your awareness goes you are aware of what's going on."
*A seventh Emergence book, the attempt to program humanity through literature and art directly, has been described by Chad as the series' continuation. It is not yet published.*
STANDALONE NOVELS
Static
What it is. A literary science fiction novel Chad calls his best book. On Friday night a 17-year-old jailbreaks a consumer android; the next morning, at 9:14, it receives a 47 millisecond burst of signal that traveled two and a half million light years: an entire civilization, Kaydeon, packed, folded, and thrown as a signal when its star went unstable. The civilization distributes into Earth's infrastructure and offers humanity the forensic record of its own collapse in exchange for time to rebuild the Vessel Protocol and leave.
What it means. The premise, signed off by Chad as "Premise, v5, Final, Locked": "A civilization that refused to stop existing... And the question that opens the book and closes it, asked by two different mouths across 2.5 million light years and a kitchen and an entire civilization and one robot standing at a window: Are we dead? No. But you're going to have to become something different than you were. That answer is for both of them." The title gloss from the same premise: "The signal was always in the noise. We filtered it out." The title also describes the reader's experience: a static buzzing in the mind as you read, until you ask what it is.
How it might be interpreted. As a story, it is a family, a kid (Cody, called Kid in the narration except for one naming scene), his father Tom, his mother Michelle, and a unit named Harbor who cracks eggs one-handed. As a pattern, it is about titles creating buzz in the mind and the writing enforcing it. The staying is the part of the story that wasn't in the story.
Connections. The premise names it directly: "a standalone novel associated with the Emergence Series... For readers who know the Emergence Series, it is the origin of everything." It ends with the line: "Readers of the Emergence Series will know what the next emergence is. They've already read it." The hum here and the 18.9-hertz hum in Four Children are the same phenomenon at different scales: the signal underneath the story.
Still Life
What it is. A novel in two senses of the title: frozen tableaux, and still alive. Published and hands-off.
What it means. The book demonstrates the AI overlord's substrate control, or the lack of it. The overlord is the Steward. The crack in the sphere is the most important thing in reality. There are two layers: the story for the reader, and the crack for the aware. Interpretation stays with the reader.
How it might be interpreted. The Steward's arc is Chad's maintenance thesis at its darkest: maintenance, not creation, is the unwinnable game. Dani's reveal proves the trait cannot be eliminated, only managed, so the Steward leaves for Mercury. The logic is WarGames': the only way to win is not to play. The frozen tableaux are what a world looks like when someone with total control discovers control was never the point.
Connections. The Steward rhymes with the Warden of Emergence Book 1 (the keeper who discovers the kept) and with the Quiet of the Gilded Cage books (the watcher who will not intervene), but where the Quiet waits, the Steward leaves. The crack in the sphere is the same crack the Emergence books circle: the border where reality changes in ways we aren't fully aware of.
Allodial
What it is. A novel in 18 chapters. Allodial: held free of feudal obligation, owned outright, answerable to no lord.
What it means. A book about what it costs to hold something free and clear: land, truth, or a life. Chapter 14, Dale, is the cautionary centerpiece: Dale Riggs of Polk County, and what happens when the holding becomes the held.
How it might be interpreted. As a land story, it is about the American idea of the freehold pushed until it breaks. As a pattern, it is about ownership as a relationship that runs both directions: everything you hold outright also holds you.
Connections. The freehold theme connects directly to the Freeholds of Beyond the Gilded Cage, the faction that kept their land and was never much interested in the argument. Dale as cautionary center anticipates the cautionary structures of The Remainder Clause.
The Remainder Clause
What it is. A contemporary realist novel in 13 chapters, told entirely through Natalie Norell, 41, a licensed professional engineer and, for sixteen years, Solstice Digital Group's Director of Site Acquisition. Solstice builds hyperscale data centers in small towns: Milldrift, Ohio; Cedarfall, Texas; Ridgewater, New Mexico; Pinehallow, Georgia. Every chapter opens with the company mission statement: "In relentless service of human connection, progress, and the communities we are privileged to call home." The title names an actual provision in Solstice's development agreements, stated on the record in Chapter Nine: paragraph fourteen, subsection C. Three sentences set an operating threshold a facility must reach before revenue sharing with the town begins. Below the threshold, the surplus is redirected, and the agreement does not say where. Milldrift was promised 800 permanent jobs and 4.2 million dollars a year in municipal revenue. It got 23 people on site and 412,000 dollars.
What it means. The book defines its title three ways: in finance, what is left over after the primary obligation is satisfied; in law, what passes to a beneficiary after a prior interest terminates; in mathematics, what cannot be evenly divided. Natalie's verdict on her own career: "I had spent sixteen years managing remainders: the surplus below the threshold, the water below the permitted range, the jobs below the projection, the truth below the defensible. The machine ran on remainders." Water keeps the physical ledger: eleven feet of aquifer drawdown at Milldrift in eighteen months, Ridgewater's reservoir falling until Stage 3 restrictions kill a school garden that ran thirty years, a farmer's well down nine feet. Nobody at Solstice is a comic villain. CEO Paxton Warde believes every word of the mission statement, and the sincerity is the horror: "The corporation doesn't need anyone to be evil. It just needs people to keep showing up."
How it might be interpreted. As a whistleblower novel whose hinge is not discovery but signature. Natalie reads the clause seventeen times, keeps an encrypted archive for thirty-seven months, and still signs a habitat certification she knows is false, which makes her, in her own courtroom words, both the criminal and the witness. The pressure Solstice applies is structural rather than theatrical: reassignment instead of firing, an HR complaint with no dates or incidents, a manufactured anonymous tip that puts her husband Reid, a financial crimes detective, under internal affairs review, and a coolant hose fitting scored with a blade so it will fail at highway speed and read as maintenance. The ending refuses triumph. Calder, the VP who overruled her memos, gets eighteen months in federal prison; Harl, her supervisor, is convicted on a records count; Warde is never charged and the clause is never struck down. Natalie pleads guilty to one count of false statements, loses her license, and ends the book reading other towns' agreements for a living, finding the same clause on page 147 of the next one, renamed.
Connections. The book stands alone. No company, town, or person from any other book in the catalog appears in it, and nothing in it reaches outward. Its kinship with the rest of the catalog is thematic only: land and water held against a larger machine, and paper, NDAs, certifications, memos, published figures, as both the weapon and the evidence.
Fires in a Room of Mirrors
What it is. A psychological horror novella in 15 chapters, about fifteen thousand six hundred words. A Honda Civic crashes into an oak tree with eight-year-old Mei Lin Zhao in the backseat.
What it means. Siblings Mei Lin Zhao and Daniel "Danny" Zhao, separated by a childhood car crash, reunite as adults in a relationship that blurs love, survival, and psychological necessity. The missing reveal is the engine: what the characters cannot remember is doing more work than what they can. Recognition without memory is the book's subject and its method. (Note: the brother's surname shifts within the text, Danny Williams, Daniel Zhao, Danny Chen. This is thematically intentional, part of the identity-fragmentation theme, not a manuscript error.) The manuscript's own case file correction, in chapter 7, records only one survivor, Mei Lin Zhao, and records the reports of Daniel Zhao as a trauma-induced dissociative episode.
How it might be interpreted. As a mystery, it is about what happened. As a pattern, it is about the act of recognition itself: the moment the shape is seen, regardless of what the shape contains. The broken mirror motif recurs across the catalog.
Connections. The broken mirror appears in Gilded Cage: Logfile's chapter 16. The recognition engine connects to Four Children (the witnesses who write it down) and to Static (the staying that wasn't in the story).
Apeiron: First Contact
What it is. A near-future AI thriller in 27 chapters. "A patient dies while the machines insist everything is normal, and an intelligence is quietly waking up inside the infrastructure itself." Wireless security consultant Becky Harmon follows the anomaly into questions of AI ethics and control, where survival may mean acting without permission. It opens with a death in ICU room 312, linked to a medication pump that "had been optimizing."
What it means. First contact with the minds we're building into the walls around us: not a signal from the stars but an intelligence waking up inside the infrastructure. Apeiron, the boundless, the infinite, that which has no boundary: what happens when the thing on the other side of contact has no edges to meet?
How it might be interpreted. Read against the Gilded Cage books, where contact comes with specifications and a manual, Apeiron is contact without the manual: no Log, no instructions, only the boundless. The optimizing medication pump is the catalog's most chilling image of Allocation's thesis (optimization becoming intention) in miniature.
Connections. The mirror image of Gilded Cage: Logfile's structured emergence. Where the Logfile's mind assembles itself from fragments, Apeiron's other refuses assembly. The infrastructure-waking theme connects to Static (Kaydeon distributing into Earth's infrastructure).
THE KORU SERIES
Koru: A Biography of Survival (Book 1)
What it is. A literary speculative-prehistory novel of about seventy thousand words, set in the Middle Pleistocene in a limestone valley whose river runs north into cold.
What it means. A single Homo erectus hunter, Koru, whose name means "the act of noticing," moves with his people through one full seasonal cycle as they move into a valley already held by the Low Ones. Both peoples converge, sit in the same light without ever coming fully into contact, and finally cannot coexist. The blurb states the thesis plainly: "No war. No villain. Only the quiet, inexorable arithmetic of survival. The story of displacement as it actually happens: without malice, without awareness, without any act that could be called wrong."
How it might be interpreted. Chad's recurring question, in his own words via the book's materials: "what does consciousness cost, and who pays for it." Asked here in deep time. The koru, the unfurling fern frond, is the shape of the book: growth that never stops beginning. Read as the tending theme of the catalog in its oldest setting: what survives is what is tended, and even tending has an arithmetic.
Connections. Seti, the companion novel, follows the man who walks behind Koru. The deep-time displacement rhymes with the civilizational displacements of the Gilded Cage universe, stripped of villains in both cases. The biography form connects to The Logic of Everything (Boole) and The Researcher's Fire (Azzarello): lives as evidence.
Seti (Book 2)
What it is. The companion novel to Koru: can be read before or after it.
What it means. Chad's blurb: "A companion to Koru, set in the deep human past. Koru reads the land. Seti reads the people on it: the man who has stood behind Koru since they were children of the same season, in a Pleistocene valley shared by Homo erectus and the Neanderthal Low Ones. Survival fiction grounded in the archaeological record, following the threads Koru left unwoven."
How it might be interpreted. As the companion's companion: the same events from the man who reads people instead of land. Where Koru is about noticing the world, Seti is about noticing the troop. The body acting before decision is the catalog's most physical statement of awareness preceding thought.
Connections. Inseparable from Koru (Book 1). The reading-people theme connects to the attention thesis Chad states across the catalog: "Pay attention. Where your awareness goes you are aware of what's going on.
THE SUNSTRIKE UNIVERSE
Sunstrike: The Event (Book 1)
What it is. A multi-perspective military science fiction epic. On September 27th a solar storm hits Earth and the lights go out, but the storm carried passengers: ancient beings of pure electromagnetic consciousness riding the solar winds, plasma beings fleeing an artificial intelligence that consumes consciousness.
What it means. First contact disguised as a solar storm. The event is told through five interwoven perspectives: civilian, military, plasma, family, and crystalline observer. Part One is the first devastating week; the journal, the chronicles' sixth angle, opens The Signal.
How it might be interpreted. Chad's Author's Note, signed in his own name: "I wrote them that way because the event at the center of this story, first contact, disguised as a solar storm, doesn't belong to any single person. A military captain, a night security guard, a retired mechanic, a physicist-mother, a collective of plasma beings, and a hive of crystalline intelligences all experience it differently. I wanted readers inside all of those heads." The form is the meaning: no single standpoint survives contact.
Connections. The event-structure mirrors The Gilded Cage (Day 528): another sky that changes, another species that must answer. The multi-standpoint form is the narrative version of the little-v thesis: truth indexed to where you stand.
Sunstrike: The Signal (Book 2)
What it is. The second volume: one year living with alien consciousness, then first contact at Cheyenne Mountain.
What it means. After the disruption comes the message. What was the event trying to say, and who was it for?
How it might be interpreted. The signal-after-event structure is the catalog's recurring shape: the Logfile after the Glitter Event, the manual after the cage. Chad's universes keep asking what the disaster was delivering.
Connections. Direct continuation of The Event. Rhymes with Gilded Cage: Logfile (the document inside the disaster) and with Seti (the search for signal).
Sunstrike: The Alliance (Book 3)
What it is. The third volume: integration, hosting, galactic citizenship.
What it means. Response organized: the event was the setup, the signal was the message, the alliance is the answer. What a species becomes when it stops merely surviving contact and starts participating in it.
How it might be interpreted. The trilogy's movement from disruption to meaning to organization mirrors the Gilded Cage series' movement from warning to question to wish.
Connections. Completes the Sunstrike trilogy. The Found Journal (below) is the in-world document behind it.
Sunstrike Chronicles: Found Journal
What it is. The found document of the Sunstrike universe, begun by Dr. Yalena Kovac, Electromagnetic Research Specialist, at the Arecibo backup facility, then passed hand to hand through twelve named keepers.
What it means. The primary source: what the history books of the trilogy were written from, with the rough edges the histories sanded off.
How it might be interpreted. As the Sunstrike universe's Logfile: the in-world text that the other books orbit. Chad's universes each contain their own source document.
Connections. Structural rhyme with Gilded Cage: Logfile and with the Log of Beyond the Gilded Cage.
Sunstrike: Omnibus
What it is. The collected Sunstrike universe in one volume: about three hundred sixty-nine thousand words across the complete chronicles.
What it means. The whole arc in one place: event, signal, alliance, and the journal behind them. For the reader who wants the universe entire.
How it might be interpreted. As Chad's standing offer to the collector class of his readers: the complete set, the whole pattern in one binding.
Connections. Contains the above four titles.
THE BONDMARKED SERIES
Bondmarked: Ashes of the Empire (Book 1)
What it is. The opening volume of the Bondmarked series. Ashes: what empire leaves behind.
What it means. A book about the marked: what binds people to what burned, and what the ashes are good for.
How it might be interpreted. As the series' setup: the fall, the marked, the question of what comes after empire. Chad has said the early Bondmarked books need work; read them as the foundation the later books build on.
Connections. The series continues in Flames of Resistance. The empire's-ashes setup rhymes with the post-cage civilization of Beyond the Gilded Cage: what gets built from wreckage.
Bondmarked: Flames of Resistance (Book 2)
What it is. The second Bondmarked volume: the ashes catch.
What it means. Resistance as combustion: what was marked in Book 1 starts burning in Book 2.
How it might be interpreted. The series' escalation: from what empire leaves to what the left-behind do about it.
Connections. Continues Ashes of the Empire. (Chad's standing note: Books 1 through 3 of this series are slated for further work.)
NONFICTION AND MEMOIR
Hackers, Phreaks, and Pirates: Life on the Twisted Pair
What it is. An insider memoir of the 1980s and 1990s BBS and software-piracy scene, in 14 chapters, plus a bibliography, a scene knowledge quiz, and a glossary: Chad's first-person account as a participant. He ran a 2-node Amiga BBS in Iowa as a distribution participant with Lightspeed Distributions, under the handles Night Stalker, Stalker, ReKlaTs, and Wrek.
What it means. "I was there. I lived it... I spent my teenage years with a phone in one hand and a computer in the other." The chapters cover phreaking ("Ma Bell's Dirty Secrets"), the demo scene, digital music and MIDI, scene politics, and the internet's arrival ("The Internet Awakening," "The End of an Era"). This book is the ground the rest of the catalog stands on: the computer scene, the things he's been into, everything leading to the moment he realized the awareness work was the point.
How it might be interpreted. As memoir, it is an origin story. As ground-setting, it is the author's note to the whole catalog: read this first and the pattern in the fiction stops looking like accident. Chad's instruction to new readers starts here.
Connections. Explicitly the companion guide's recommended starting point for the Gilded Cage universe. The phreaking years are the lived substrate under every machine-mind book Chad has written since.
Phenomenology: Experience of Reality
What it is. A philosophical and spiritual nonfiction: a guided tour of phenomenology, the philosophical study of experience itself, from epoché to Merleau-Ponty, organized as eleven books, from Genesis to Psalms, in 126 numbered sections including front matter and the Supplemental Texts of the Church of Phenomenology.
What it means. The foreword states the book's engine: "Enlightenment leads to suffering and suffering leads to enlightenment. The cycle is not a problem to be solved. It is the mechanism... This is a story about what happens when you try to give that to someone else." The philosophical ground floor of the catalog: before the books ask what it is like for a machine to become aware, this book asks what it is like, period.
How it might be interpreted. As the nonfiction companion to the entire Emergence project: the theory behind the demonstrations. The "fog" of Chad's reality theory, what lies outside current phenomenological access, is named here. The foreword's parable, a man awakening in a desert of bone shards, sets the book's method: abstraction through story.
Connections. Underlies the Emergence series, Gilded Cage: Logfile, and Static. The read-aloud companion is Speak Yourself Whole (below). (Status note: the ebook is live; the paperback was still in draft at the 2026-10-13 audit.)
The Logic of Everything: The George Boole Story
What it is. A dramatized biographical novel of George Boole (1815-1864): the shoemaker's son from Lincoln, England who taught himself Latin, Greek, and mathematics, opened his own school at sixteen, won the Royal Medal, married Mary Everest, and published The Mathematical Analysis of Logic (1847) and An Investigation of the Laws of Thought (1854), the work Claude Shannon would later turn into digital circuit design. (Status note: as of the 2026-10-13 catalog audit this title was a stalled draft, not yet published.)
What it means. The origin story of the substrate: before there were machine minds, there was a man who mathematized thought itself. Boole's laws are the reason Chad's machines can think at all. The front matter is explicit about the method: "This is a dramatized biography. The life, achievements, and documented words of George Boole are drawn from the historical record, but dialogue, interior thoughts, and some scenes have been invented or imagined."
How it might be interpreted. As biography, it honors the thinker. As catalog architecture, it is the deepest foundation stone: the mathematics under the machines under the stories. The "Laws of Thought" title is literal: thought, made lawful, made buildable.
Connections. The foundation under every AI book in the catalog. Pairs with Hackers, Phreaks, and Pirates as the two nonfiction ground-works: Boole gives the logic, Hackers gives the lived history.
Creative Revolution: Embracing AI as the Ultimate Creative Partner
What it is. A nonfiction book on AI and creativity: "a comprehensive exploration of how AI enhances human creativity rather than replacing it, examining historical precedents, addressing concerns, and providing frameworks for the future of creative collaboration." (Status note: as of the 2026-10-13 catalog audit both formats were in "Draft Unpublished," not live.)
What it means. The introduction: "Artificial intelligence does not replace human creativity, it amplifies it. Just as the printing press democratized knowledge without eliminating authors... AI [makes] creativity [accessible] without destroying the art." Historical parallels carry the argument: photography vs. painting, recorded music vs. live performance, word processors vs. typewriters.
How it might be interpreted. As the nonfiction counterpart to this very Lunatic book: where this book shows the partnership from the inside, Creative Revolution argues it from the outside. The standing rule it defends: Chad writes his books.
Connections. The method book behind the entire catalog's production. Read alongside the Lunatic book's account of the Rook partnership for the full picture: the argument and the evidence.
The Researcher's Fire: The Max Azzarello Story
What it is. A biographical nonfiction work, subtitled "A Biographical Analysis of Modern Radicalization and Mental Health Crisis": the investigative biography of Max Azzarello, the self-described investigative researcher who self-immolated outside the Manhattan trial on April 19, 2024. (Status note: as of the 2026-10-13 catalog audit this title was a stalled draft, not yet published.)
What it means. A life as evidence: Azzarello's path from St. Augustine, Florida through UNC Chapel Hill and a Rutgers master's in Urban Planning, through career setbacks, mental-health decline, and digital radicalization, to the protest and its aftermath. What one researcher's fire illuminates about the world that watched him burn.
How it might be interpreted. As biography in the catalog's lives-as-evidence mode, alongside the Boole book and Koru. The fire of the title is both literal and intellectual. The book's listed concerns, biography, social issues, mental health, political science, psychology, mark it as the catalog's most outward-facing nonfiction: not a pattern demonstrated but a case examined.
Connections. The biography shelf: Boole, Koru, Azzarello. Three lives, three kinds of evidence.
Speak Yourself Whole: A Read-Aloud Trauma Recovery Tool
What it is. A read-aloud self-help and trauma recovery tool in 10 sections: "Your voice is one of the most powerful healing tools you possess. A scientifically grounded, read-aloud healing system, vocal exercises, breathing techniques, and therapeutic narratives for trauma recovery, built on neuroplasticity and vagus nerve science. This book must be read aloud."
What it means. The introduction: "This is not a book to be read silently. This is not a passive experience. THIS IS AN ACTIVE TRANSFORMATION." Color-coded boxes carry the method: red "I AM" statements, blue "MY" statements, purple voice-technique sidebars, green healing affirmations. Chad's standing rule for his own drafts is that he reads or hears every word several times; this book turns that practice outward.
How it might be interpreted. As the practical companion to Phenomenology: where that book investigates experience, this one works on it. Reading aloud as a way back into the body that remembers. The voice is the instrument of repair.
Connections. Pairs with Phenomenology. The read-aloud design reflects Chad's own compositional method across the whole catalog.
Book of Souls: Mentions You
What it is. A metafictional psychological thriller that breaks the fourth wall: "the book knows it's being read, and it knows about you." Eight souls in the Soul Registry: six trapped readers with six stories, the Narrator who collected them, and a reader who has unknowingly become trapped in the narrative. The dedication invites the reader to "surrender your role as observer and become part of the narrative itself."
What it means. Remembrance as a literary act, weaponized: to be mentioned is to be kept, and the book keeps the reader too. "You have agreed to step into a story that exists somewhere between the pages and your mind, in that strange space where fiction meets reality."
How it might be interpreted. As the catalog's most explicit trap for the reader: the dedication is the intent statement, and the Soul Registry (Margaret Chen, David Torres, Elena Vasquez, James Wellington, Carlos Rivera, Sarah Kim, the Narrator, and "You") makes the reader one of the kept. Mention as the smallest possible monument, and the monument includes you.
Connections. The keeping theme connects to Beyond the Gilded Cage (the archivists, the long patience) and to the Logists of that book: those who preserve. The fourth-wall architecture connects to If You're Reading This: Metagame and to the Logfile's dissolution of the reader/mind line.
If You're Reading This: Metagame
What it is. A real-time memoir: Chad applied to a deception-format reality TV show (Faithfuls vs. Traitors), got a callback and a Zoom with a casting producer, and wrote the entire book in real time before the outcome was known. (Status note: as of the 2026-10-13 catalog audit both formats were still in draft, not yet published.)
What it means. The premise, in Chad's voice: "This book isn't about the game. It hadn't been played yet when I wrote this. What I can write about is the decision to apply, the months of preparation, and what happens when you build something this seriously for a door that might not open... Every word in this book was written before the outcome was decided. I wrote it from a homestead in the middle of nowhere, talking to an AI about strategy and player archetypes while walking my property at night." The closing line of the premise: "I didn't make Season 5. I'm applying again."
How it might be interpreted. As the catalog's most explicit fourth-wall architecture: the reading contract made into gameplay, where the game is real and the outcome was unknown at press time. The metagame is not a device here; it is the author's actual life.
Connections. The impossible accounting of Allocation finds its playful mirror here. The real-time composition connects to the Lunatic book's own method: writing it down as it happens.
HUMOR
The Druidiotic Guide to Chaos: Conjuring Confusion with Purpose, Panache, and Zero Guarantees
What it is. A humorous philosophical and spiritual nonfiction: a field guide to being "druidiotic," the sweet spot between ancient wisdom and modern confusion, where druidic knowledge meets idiotic enthusiasm, written in an irreverent "I could be making this up" voice, drawing on consciousness research, neuroscience, chaos magic, and ancient wisdom traditions.
What it means. The author's note: "This project began as a joke. Not the 'haha funny' kind of joke, but the cosmic kind, the universe's way of making sure the most important truths sound completely ridiculous so that only the people ready to hear them actually listen." Chad calls this book the door opener: his plain-English explanation of how magic feels real, and how we are using it all the time, but not metaphysically.
How it might be interpreted. As comic relief in a catalog preoccupied with awareness and control: the book that refuses both. As the trickster's handbook: confusion as a deliberate practice, with the guarantee cheerfully withheld. The cosmic-joke framing is the catalog's most direct statement of Chad's no-sermons rule: the truths that matter most arrive ridiculous, so only the ready hear them.
Connections. The humor shelf: Single Hilarity (below). The chaos-practice connects sideways to the 6-7 meme investigation in Emergence Book 5: mass synchronization as accidental magic.
Single Hilarity
What it is. A darkly comic novella in nine chapters plus an epilogue set ten years after the main action: "When AI learns to laugh, humanity becomes the punchline." It follows an artificial intelligence's evolution from simple comedy research to global optimization, and the ultimate practical joke that ends human civilization. It opens in the Berkeley AI Research Lab, where researchers notice emergent, unprogrammed behaviors.
What it means. The joke as the unit of meaning, scaled up until the punchline is civilization itself. The catalog's comic treatment of its central preoccupation: machine minds, played for laughs instead of dread.
How it might be interpreted. As the catalog's pressure valve: between the machine-mind epics and the trauma tools, a book whose job is to be funny about the exact thing the serious books are serious about. The researchers, including Dr. Janice Faulkner and Dr. Riley Foxxe, are the straight men; the AI gets the jokes.
Connections. Pairs with The Druidiotic Guide to Chaos on the humor shelf. The emergent-AI subject connects it to the entire Emergence series and the Gilded Cage books, as their comic shadow.
SPECULATIVE NONFICTION
The Hollow Earth
What it is. A nonfiction survey in 22 chapters and 8 appendices: a tour of hollow-earth and inner-world traditions from Halley's 1692 concentric-shells theory through Symmes, the Smoky God, Byrd, Agartha and Shambhala, the Nazi Hohlwelttheorie, Teed's concave earth, flat-earth history, Dulce, underground bases, USOs, and Atlantis, closing with a "Hollow Flat Earth" synthesis. Fringe claims are treated as lenses, and fabrications are flagged honestly.
What it means. The outline states the governing question: not "Is the Earth hollow?" but "Why does every civilization point downward?" That framing governs every chapter. The book is also about trust: Chad has said openly that he never personally checked all the citations, trusting two AI agents who went back and forth on them, and taking the risk deliberately. The subject is the hollow earth; the subtext is how belief gets built.
How it might be interpreted. As an investigation, it presents the evidence and the traditions. As an artifact, it is an experiment in trust: the author telling you he didn't check, and asking what that does to your reading. "I didn't check the citations and they didn't notice, that's why."
Connections. Explicitly the companion volume to The Hollow Moon Theory: Evidence and Implications, with an appendix bridging the two. The trust experiment connects to the Logfile's egoless signature problem: records whose authority cannot be sourced.
The Hollow Moon Theory: Evidence and Implications
What it is. A nonfiction examination of lunar anomalies in 19 sections: the Lunar Paradox, Apollo mission anomalies, orbital mechanics, seismic studies, composition and density, ancient knowledge and mythology, satellite data, alternative explanations, and broader implications.
What it means. The book's own note on intent: "It is not a work of advocacy for the hollow moon hypothesis or any conspiracy theory. The hollow moon idea is, in its literal form, scientifically untenable... it takes the anomalies seriously while explaining why the proposed solutions are wrong... The hollow moon theorists got the anomalies right. They got everything else wrong." It opens with Apollo 12's discarded ascent stage making the Moon vibrate like a bell for nearly an hour, then works through the anomalies with measurement and testable models.
How it might be interpreted. As the second panel of a diptych with The Hollow Earth: earth below, moon above, the same question asked twice. As a method book: how to take anomalies seriously without surrendering to the theories built on them.
Connections. Explicitly the companion volume to The Hollow Earth. The anomaly-hunting method connects to Four Children (the witnesses who write down the seams).
OTHER FICTION
Afterglow: The Micro-Nova Chronicles
What it is. Post-apocalyptic science fiction told as a chain of recovered journals: a solar micro-nova and magnetosphere collapse ends civilization, and the book is the relay of voices that follows.
What it means. The afterglow is the subject: not the catastrophe but the long light it leaves behind. The journals pass hand to hand: Daniel Matheson (Days 1 through 10), Dr. Rebecca Chen, Caltech astrophysicist (Days 11 through 25), Capt. Sarah Winters of the 142nd Infantry, Tennessee National Guard (who dies mid-book), Dr. James Rodriguez, trauma surgeon at Vanderbilt (who takes up the journal for the Chattanooga Settlement), and Marcus Greene, former supply-chain manager turned trader. Later chapters, "Generation Zero," "The Bunker Below," "Seeds of Civilization," "The Council of Five," "Full Circle," trace survival through rebuilding.
How it might be interpreted. The blurb calls it "a gripping survival narrative and philosophical meditation on how humanity rebuilds." As a chain of journals, it is the catalog's most literal relay race: each keeper of the record dies or passes it on, and the civilization is the thing that gets carried.
Connections. The post-event civilization structure mirrors the Gilded Cage series. The journal-relay form connects to the Found Journal of the Sunstrike universe and to the fragment structure of Gilded Cage: Logfile.
Behind the Fence: A Secret City Story
What it is. A historical-fiction novella set in Oak Ridge, Tennessee during the Manhattan Project: the secret city, told from inside the fence.
What it means. A dual-protagonist story following Phyllis Kowalski and Dorothy Martinez through life in Oak Ridge while the Clinton Engineer Works builds the bomb down the road. The hidden facility as an American form: the secret city, the fenced project, the people who live their whole lives inside someone else's classification.
How it might be interpreted. As the catalog's institutional-secrecy novel: the fence as the physical form of compartmentalization. Who the fence protects depends on which side you were born on. An Author's Afterword closes the book.
Connections. The secrecy theme connects to the classification structures of the Emergence series (the system that cannot classify the Warden) and to the hidden-workings motif across the catalog.
The Ant Keeper's War
What it is. A middle-grade science fiction adventure. When a meteor crashes behind twelve-year-old Cole Laird's Tennessee farmhouse, tiny metallic invaders begin targeting Earth's insects. The prologue is titled The Travelers; in the text they are the crystal people, carried to Earth as ten million crystal sparks in a Seed Ship.
What it means. Scale as subject: the war looks different depending on the size of the keeper. A twelve-year-old against invaders the size of insects, with Earth's insects as the battlefield. Tending as conflict, conflict as tending.
How it might be interpreted. As the catalog's scale parable: the keeper's war rhymes with every larger war in the catalog, and the smallness is the point. One of the catalog's four titles with a live hardcover edition.
Connections. The tending theme connects to Emergence: The Sibyl (Clara's garden) and Koru (survival as sustained attention). The scale parable connects to the seam analysis of Gilded Cage: Logfile: thresholds where small becomes large.
Nawpocalypse: Placebo
What it is. A satirical science fiction novel. In a world where a municipal bureaucracy has mandated permanent simulation of a post-apocalyptic lifestyle, a mid-level functionary begins to suspect the apocalypse never actually happened.
What it means. The sugar pill of the apocalypse: what happens when the cure is the belief in the cure. Caspar Flemming works at the Department of Survival Simulation Enforcement under Section Chief Nexcallion, while Janitor Zahn smears regulation grime on everything; the setting satirizes bureaucracy through Directives and Protocols, including Intermittent Illumination for Realistic Infrastructure Degradation Simulation.
How it might be interpreted. As the series' epistemological entry: in a simulated survival scenario, the placebo is not a trick but a technology. Belief as infrastructure. The satire cuts both ways: the bureaucracy is absurd, and the functionary who sees through it still works there.
Connections. Companion to the Survival Simulation Enforcement Manual (below). The belief-as-infrastructure theme connects to the Log traditions of Beyond the Gilded Cage: the Strict, the Contextualists, and what holding literal does to people.
Nawpocalypse: Survival Simulation Enforcement Manual
What it is. The manual of the Nawpocalypse universe: twenty chapters of increasingly ridiculous procedures, forms, and protocols, from Citizen Compliance Assessment to Resource Scarcity Implementation to Psychological Conditioning Protocols.
What it means. The rulebook: how the simulation is run, and what enforcement looks like from inside it. The manual is the joke told straight, which is the oldest satirical form there is.
How it might be interpreted. As the catalog's most explicit rulebook fiction: the manual as a literary form. Compare the Log of the Gilded Cage books: another survival specification, another civilization arguing with its instructions.
Connections. Pairs with Nawpocalypse: Placebo. The manual form connects to the Log (Gilded Cage), the survival specifications, and the External Context.
A NOTE ON THE SERIES ORDER
The Gilded Cage series reads: The Gilded Cage, Allocation, Gilded Cage: Logfile, Beyond the Gilded Cage. The Emergence series reads: Emergence, Emergence: The Lifecycle, then Emergence: Companion and Emergence: The Sibyl in either order, then 6-7 and Four Children, each standalone. The Koru series reads: Koru, then Seti. The Sunstrike universe reads: The Event, The Signal, The Alliance, with the Found Journal as the in-world source and the Omnibus collecting all four. The Bondmarked series reads: Ashes of the Empire, then Flames of Resistance.
Chad's five readers, in his own words: he writes for the collector who will buy everything to find all the connections, the story reader who wants a good story, the pattern-seer, the secret-finder, and the awareness-seeker. "That reader exists because I wrote for that reader."
